Why PE-backed companies should automate before they hire

PE-backed companies under growth pressure often respond to workflow pain with more headcount. In many cases, the better first move is to automate the repetitive handoffs that are creating the pressure.

April 5, 2026

PE-backed companies are often asked to grow quickly and improve margins at the same time.

That combination puts management teams in a familiar bind.

Workload rises. The instinct is to hire.

Sometimes that is the right answer. Often it is not the first one.

Why hiring is the default

It is fast to explain.

More volume equals more people. Everyone understands the logic.

The problem is that hiring often absorbs a workflow problem without fixing it.

The same manual routing, follow-up, copying, and exception handling still exist. The company just bought more people to carry them.

Why automation can be better first

If the workflow is repetitive and cross-system, automation can change the cost structure before headcount expands:

  • fewer manual touches
  • faster cycle times
  • less queue pressure
  • cleaner handoffs

That is especially valuable in PE-backed environments where every incremental hire gets scrutinized.

Where this applies most often

Look first at:

  • finance ops
  • revenue ops
  • onboarding
  • support back-office work
  • reporting and compliance routines

These are the places where companies often add labor to compensate for workflow friction instead of addressing the friction itself.

The better management question

Before approving another hire, ask:

  • Is the work increasing because demand is healthy, or because the workflow is inefficient?
  • How much of the workload is repetitive coordination?
  • What would happen if we automated the handoffs first?

That does not mean "never hire."

It means make sure you are not scaling a weak process with expensive human labor.

If you want to evaluate that tradeoff on one workflow, book a workflow audit or compare automation with hiring.
